Paying back: Former Dover woman plans 46-mile trek to help others

There was a time when Stacey Baker couldnt put one step in front of another, so her commitment to run and cycle 46.2 miles this month is a testament to her emotional as well as physical strength.

The former Dover resident is indebted to an international foundation that helped her recover from Guillain Barre Syndrome, and she believes in paybacks. But the Durham, N.C., resident also is paying it forward to help other GBS victims who find themselves struggling with the life-threatening experience.

She is Running for a Reason to raise funds for the GBS/CIDP (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy) Foundation International.

Ten years ago, Baker was a Dover High senior, captain of a state-bound volleyball team and looking forward to a full year of activities when she was stopped suddenly by a mysterious illness that zapped her strength and ultimately left her paralyzed.

Warner Bros. keeps pushing the envelope in delivering TV shows and movies in alternative ways. After announcing last month that it was teaming up with BitTorrent, the studio today is now offering videos via online video service Guba.

Warner Bros. is starting with around 120 titles, ranging from movies such as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Best in Show, to TV shows including Babylon 5.

The shows can be rented, starting at $1.99 cents for movies. Or they can be bought and downloaded onto a computer or copied onto a laptop. Movies prices range between $9.99 and $19.99. They can't be copied yet to portable players, though that's in the works. The company is using Windows DRM, though Guba says they're looking into other formats.

McGhee inspires high achievers

When the Hearts right-back played the ball in behind the visitors' defence for Andrius Velicka to run on to, the yellow line had been breached and the Lithuanian striker had plenty of time to pick out the unmarked and onrushing Driver at the back post. The young Englishman's finish was of the highest quality, volleying the ball back across the prone figure of Graeme Smith and into the corner for the opening goal, his sixth of this campaign and Hearts' 499th SPL goal. Motherwell's obduracy and spirit were impressive, and kept clear chances for Hearts at a premium. Indeed, the only other time the home side threatened to extend their lead was when some neat interplay between the diminutive Andrius Ksanavicius and Velicka saw the striker through on goal with only Smith to beat, only to flick the ball against the Motherwell keeper.

Makers of the movie "Milk" are going to film scenes of marches through the Castro next month, and are looking for volunteer extras of "all ages, races and genders," 18 and older. Filming is from 6:30 p.m. to midnight Feb. 4 at Castro and Market, and from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Feb. 8 at Market and Franklin. "There are no auditions," say the filmmakers. "If you show up and sign up, you will be used."

Marchers are also invited to a free screening of the documentary, "The Times of Harvey Milk," on Monday at 4:30 p.m. at the Castro.

P.S.: The City Hall rooms where Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone were shot were redone in the '90s, so the old spaces will be re-created as sets for the movie. Movie buff Bob McDowell says the last time the San Francisco mayor's office appeared in a movie was in "Dirty Harry." Anybody remember later movie visits there?

And Mark Abrahamson reports that at the Edge, political and cinematic fans are speculating that John Travolta would be right to play Dianne Feinstein in the movie.

Le Tour de Langkawi 2008 - Stage 5

The battle of the sprinters continued in stage 5 today with Alberto Loddo of Tinkoff Credit systems adding to his stage victories. Alberto had the fastest legs in the mass finish with Argentine Mauro Richeze of CSF Group/Navigare second and Swiss sprinter Aurelien Clerc of Bouygues Telecom finishing third. Clerc displaced Anuar Manan as the green jersey wearer as Anuar faltered at the finish in sixth place.

The win for Loddo on the rolling stage was a sort of reply from the Italian following Danilo Hondo's win in Stage Four yesterday and where after today, the score stood at one stage win each for the prolific sprinters.

In Boston, Mayor and Librarian Clash Over Control

Margolis and some of his allies, who say it could have a chilling effect on donors and even lead to the money being spent outside the library system.

"It gets to the very core of the independence of the library trustees and the basis on which people give money to the library," said Mr. Margolis, who will step down in June after 11 years on the job. "They give it with the expectation that the library is the steward of that money and of the institution's destiny — not with the expectation that the mayor or someone else downtown decides how or when it's used."

But Dot Joyce, a spokeswoman for Mr. Menino, said the city did not intend to use the library trust funds for other purposes, and had no right to do so. "We would never be able to do that," Ms. Joyce said. "We only want to make sure the money is being used for what the people who left it to the library intended it for."

Carbondale council to discuss goals for new year

CARBONDALE — In their first meeting of 2008, members of the Carbondale City Council will be discussing what they hope to achieve with the budget in the coming fiscal year.A seven-page brief drafted by city staff entitled, "Review of Community Goals for the Fiscal Year 2009 Budget" will frame the council’s discussion.Items mentioned in the review range from the abstract, such as promoting "a sense of community pride for accomplishments and progress during the year," to the specific, in fixing crumbling sidewalks and water lines. The total city budget for fiscal year 2008 was about $42.9 million, an increase of $880,000 over the year before.Councilman Chris Wissmann, who has warned in the past that increasing costs might mean the city will have to abandon its zero-dollar property tax assessment, said Saturday he was unsure of what to expect as far as what can be accomplished in the FY 2009 budget."There are some water line replacements on Pecan Street, where the water mains have broken on a regular basis … sidewalks are ongoing, and bicycle paths," he said, highlighting a few bricks-and-mortar projects.
