Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were spotted on the red carpet of the Ocean's 13 premiere at the Cannes Film Festival Thursday. ACTU pleads for rate rise amnesty
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is being urged to consider the plight of working families when deciding whether to increase interest rates this week. Analysts say higher than expected December quarter inflation figures and solid domestic demand give the RBA a strong case to increase interest rates at its board meeting in Sydney tomorrow. If the bank's board does decide to raise rates, they will be at their highest level in 12 years. The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) says low and middle income families cannot afford another rise, and the RBA should hold rates at current levels until the full impact of the global financial situation becomes clearer. ACTU president Sharan Burrow says many families already have their finances stretched to the limit by mortgages, credit cards and other loans, and the RBA should look at other economies.
To an unlikely group, Everett feels like home
The volunteers attended 16 hours of training for teaching English as a second language.
Muhina's wife, Isha Mbanda, 33, attends each week. English is her fourth language, after Swahili, Af Maay and another Somali dialect.
"I-live-in-Ev-er-ett," she said in a recent class, pausing between each syllable.
Katherine Ittner, one of the volunteers, smiled warmly and nodded at Mbanda. There were six volunteers who smiled non-stop, eager to lean in and gently correct grammar gone awry from just four students.
"We wanted to share God's love, and we knew the best way to demonstrate God's love was to help them learn English," Gatata said. "We are disappointed that there are only a few students, but we hope that will grow."
Many Bantu families follow strict patriarchal traditions, Gatata said.
ADAC continues to set standard for industry
Most interior product lines are either represented in an ADAC showroom or have their own space there. For instance, international fabric companies Brunschwig & Fils, Duralee and Clarence House all have ADAC space. Showrooms include high-end furniture and antiques, rugs and floor coverings, kitchen design and equipment, lighting and lamps and virtually any item one finds in residential or commercial space. Additionally, local design luminaries such as Jerry Pair, Dorothy H. Travis and Leslie Holland have their own showrooms. While Atlanta is home to other design venues, such as Miami Circle, ADAC "helped establish Atlanta as a design center," said Savannah School of Art and Design-Atlanta interior design professor Liset Robinson. "As Atlanta grows, it's becoming a hub for interior design, and ADAC is certainly a part of that." Some professionals assert that ADAC is paramount nationally as a design destination.
