Course gives students closer view of Holocaust

Recent events such as the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the crisis in Darfur make learning about the Holocaust relevant today, she said. Since 2000, there also has been encouragement from the Anti-Defamation League and the Archdiocese of Atlanta to teach students in Catholic schools about the Holocaust, said Tam Smith, Mount de Sales' social studies chairman and the teacher of the class.

"It's a way for Catholics to reconcile with the Jewish faith over years of divisiveness," he said. "I guess there is emphasis on Catholic schools being more aware of what's going on with the Holocaust, that it's the worst example of genocide, yet it's still happening."

In a way, he said, it also may be about teaching good citizenship to "train people to stand up and say no to this - never again."

Mount de Sales students don't use a Holocaust textbook.

Vases, pillows and other house warming accessories

The effect is almost like a transom, Pesce said, and it lets in more of the light we crave this time of year.

Speaking of light, buy yourself some new candles, and burn them to bring warmth and shimmer to this season of darkness, said Donna Horst of Cynthia J. Hoffman Interior Design. The light of candles symbolizes promise, she said, so their impact is emotional as well as visual.

And don't ignore the power of scent, Horst said. An aromatherapy diffuser might not add a lot to your decor, but it could lift your spirits as much as a new rug or lamp.

8. Make it personal. Another decorative element with emotional appeal is personal photos. Computers make it easy to print prized pictures in almost any size you want, so you can change your display on a whim.

Sri Lankan Military Says Air Force Destroyed Suicide Training Base

Sri Lankan military officials say air force jets destroyed a training base for Tamil Tiger rebels Thursday in the north of the country.

A Sri Lankan Air Force spokesman said the base was a "suicide training facility" in rebel-held territory in the jungle.

Also Thursday, Sri Lankan officials said at least four people were killed and 13 others wounded when a suicide bomber riding a bicycle blew himself up in the north.

The military blamed Tamil Tiger rebels for the attack, which happened in the northern Jaffna peninsula.

Sri Lanka's government formally pulled out of a 2002 Norwegian-brokered cease-fire with the rebels earlier this month.

At least 70,000 people have been killed since the rebels began fighting for an independent homeland in 1983 - claiming discrimination by Sri Lanka's majority-Sinhalese population. The Tamil Tigers already control much of the island's north.

Don't root for the bad guy, because although he may have several spacious New York City apartments, a closet full of natty suits, and a beauty-queen wife (and treat his momma right), he's still a cold-blooded killer. Ridley Scott's American Gangster — based on a New York magazine article profiling Frank Lucas, a real-life drug kingpin in 1960s and '70s Harlem — makes sure we understand that Lucas (Denzel Washington) is responsible for unleashing deadly, near-pure heroin (imported directly from Southeast Asian sources at the height of the Vietnam War) onto American streets. Paralleling Lucas's rise to power, with far less glamour, is the story of cop Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe), who's also a lawyer (thanks to night school) and a man of unimpeachable character — to his detriment, as it turns out, since every other officer on the force is totally dirty and won't work with him.

Delhi's fearless cycle enthusiasts

Cycling may not yet be classified as an extreme sport, but a quick pedal around central Delhi in the evening rush hour suggests it may want to put in an application.

Buses roar past, belching fumes. Cars weave in and out of imaginary lanes, and auto-rickshaws try to overtake you on the inside.

It is certainly not the safest way to see the sights in India's capital, and it makes for a dangerous commute. But Delhi's cyclists hope their time is about to come.

The Delhi Cycling Club has about 250 members at the moment - with a target of 1,000 by the end of the year.

'Fed up'

"The good thing is that most of the people who are getting enrolled with us are car users who want to give up cars," says Nalin Sinha, a leading member of the club, who campaigns on road safety issues.

Dickens Festival takes over downtown Riverside

Women with parasols and men in top hats strolled along Mission Inn Avenue in downtown Riverside on Saturday.

Dennis Forel, of Torrance, pedaled his 1868-style bicycle with a 52-inch front wheel past Bob Mogg, who snapped a photo with a camera box he designed to resemble a Daguerreotype camera.

"It's like stepping back in time," said Doris Taylor, of Lexington, Ky., who was in Riverside visiting family.
