| STATEHOUSE: Rep. Jones pushes Internet safety policies for public ...
BOSTON — You can lock the doors and windows, hold their hand at the mall and buy training wheels for bicycles. But a major danger facing kids today is right above the keyboard. "The Internet is one of the biggest risks we have for kids safety right now," said Lawrence Lt. Sean Burke, who is president of a national school safety group. And, a North of Boston lawmaker wants to make sure the time kids spend on school computers is safer. Rep. Bradley H. Jones Jr., R-North Reading, is pushing legislation to require every school district to have a policy for making the Internet safe for minors and make the policy known to parents and legal guardians. "It's important that any parent be able to know what (the school system's) policy is, and even if there is no policy in particular," Jones said.
Injured rider's husband works for safety of other bike commuters
LATE LAST WEEK, a bicyclist on his way to work stopped on Shore Drive, dismounted and disappeared into some brush to retrieve a package. There, inside a brown sack, was the booty he'd been promised the day before, A bike helmet. A pair of gloves. A blinking LED light. For the man who had left the sack, Rich Roberts, it was a way of saying thanks, and of making a small difference by aiding another rider. His wife, Maxine, was hit by two cars Oct. 29 while riding her bike on Shore Drive, near the Lesner Bridge in Virginia Beach. She sustained a broken collarbone, a broken femur, six broken ribs, two collapsed lungs and a massive laceration on her left side. She likely survived only because she was wearing a helmet, which was destroyed in the accident.
McCain's character beyond question
Someone who has demonstrated the ability to make the hard choices for the good of the people. To tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. McCain has demonstrated that time and again in the past; he will perform in the same manner in the future. I do not make this endorsement lightly. There are many good candidates and I have been studying the options very carefully. I decided several months ago to support John McCain for the Republican Party nomination. .
NIU Students, Community Gather To Share Grief
DeKALB, Ill. (CBS) ― After the shooting spree had ended at Northern Illinois University most of the stunned, emotionally scarred students opted to leave school and head home. But some remained in DeKalb, and all through the day and night, have had several opportunities to come together and comfort one another. As CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports, there was comfort in numbers Friday night as members of the community and beyond gathered in prayer, as NIU employees worked to shine some light on this otherwise dark day. "We will get through this together," said NIU President Dr. John Peters. The murders of five students here by former grad student Stephen Kazmierczak has shaken not only current classmates, but former ones as well. Many came to the campus Friday to lay flowers at a memorial, reflect and grieve.
Literary arts: Solid foundation laid
For anyone desirous of a single volume for the study of Emancipation in Jamaican history, there is currently no better book. Thirteen 'heavyweight' intellectuals tackle the subject and yet there is no significant overlap. Indeed, every contribution enriches the reader. Emancipation is the watershed experience of Jamaica as a slave society for centuries. Political independence is secondary because freedom is first for fulfilment of meaningfulness in life. What 1962 meant in essence was that the achieving of meaningful living became ours to decide and shape and achieve. Rupert Lewis says this beautifully as he concludes his excellent exposition of Garvey's words immortalised lyrically by Marley: 'Emancipate yourself from mental slavery'. Lewis makes it clear that "issues of justice and economic opportunities for our people ...

The values include seeking knowledge and finding answers; thinking ahead; planning and organizing; setting and achieving goals; having the courage to try news things; appreciating those around us; having a positive attitude; and having a winning attitude by seeking out guidance and positive role models. For example, in "Traveling Bear and the Search for Treasure," Traveling Bear and his grandparents head into a cave to search for treasure. Throughout the venture into the cave, T-Bear faces challenges that require him to sustain courage and perseverance in order to achieve the goal of reaching the treasure chest of gems. In "Traveling Bear and the Yellow Flipper Roller Coaster," T-Bear gets a lesson in thinking ahead as he and his friends Mookie and Chuga spend a day at the Big Top Amusement Park.
