Oda rejects poll suggesting Afghan support for NATO plummets

Canada's international development minister took issue with a new poll Monday that suggests Afghans are increasingly critical of the war in their country. Bev Oda, the minister responsible for the Canadian International Development Agency, dismissed the findings of the survey, which suggested support for NATO has plummeted the last year and the Taliban is growing in strength. .

Banish Plastic Bags And Save The Turtles

EVERY time you use a plastic carrier bag a sea turtle dies.

That's the message on the Mail's cover page as readers are urged to "BANISH THE BAGS".

See "a British family on a weekly shop". And know: "In a distant sea a rare turtle, plastic bags lodged in its guts, is slowly dying."

Can something be done to save it? No, not The Great British Shop - that for another campaign - the turtle? Yes, says the Mail. In all there are "13 billion ways you can help."

Sadly, one of these ways does not involve pulling the plastic bag from the featured turtle's guts. Nor does it include removing the plastic bag that "chokes" another turtle, also pictured. It is too late to save the gannet, which lies on a Cornwall beach, strangled by a carrier bag.

Time to grow up about driving

The phone gets dialed, the cigarette lit and the coffee mug is put back into play. Three items, two hands not on the steering wheel at the same time and someone who should know better zooming off to start their day and woe-be-unto anyone who might be in their way. The stray jogger. The delivery guy. The police officer.

These people do seem to have the ability to pound their horn if you get in the way. Or flip someone off.

It has been suggested that there be no-phone zones around schools. Folks, do we really need a law to tell us how to behave responsibly? Are we really that rude and self-absorbed that we can't gets the kids to school without a phone conversation?

If a law is enacted I'd suggest that anyone breaking it be hit with two penalties. One, their phone is immediately smashed with a hammer.

Road rage doc receives discharge

A Belle River doctor who was previously fined for physically and emotionally abusing patients received a conditional discharge Friday for a case of road rage in which he punched a woman in the face.

In handing down the decision, which carries 12 months probation for Dr. Charles Rathe, Justice Micheline Rawlins said the road rage was "an isolated act in an otherwise exemplary life."

Rawlins also took issue with the prosecution's suggestion that the assault was even more aggravating because Rathe punched a woman. She said she was "standing up for women" and that the suggestion by assistant Crown attorney George Spartinos was "sexist."

Through the lens, digitally

To meet the new Bollywood, you need to get out of Mumbai. We found it 125 km down the highway from Mumbai, next to a bicycle repair shop and a tea seller, in a large village called Neral.

The only theatre here, the single-screen Mahesh Talkies, was on the brink of being shut down before being reincarnated last year. It now downloads films on a satellite link, using a technology that few have begun to use across the globe.

From themes to work ethics to the way films are written, sold and distributed, the world's most watched movie industry is going through its biggest transformation ever. In ways visible and invisible, this change will touch the lives of millions of people across the globe — including those who watch it and those who live off it.

All that, however, would have could come to nothing if theatre owners like Srinivas Dasrath Dhule in Neral did not ride the new wave.

2008's far-out festivals

Will Lord of the Drains emerge victorious? Will Osama Bin Liner rule again? What better way to celebrate Australia Day on January 26 than cockroach racing? Brisbane's Story Bridge Hotel has been hosting the world championships for 26 years. BYO bug or you can buy one at the venue (``We do all the necessary training,'' says hotel owner Richard Deery.) The event – 14 races, including steeplechases, each with at least 20 contestants – attracts thousands of spectators. Last year almost $10,000 for the Mater Children's Hospital was raised.

FEBRUARY

Brazil in Rio de Janeiro is recognised as the daddy of all festivals. Brazilians know how to party with style and more than 500,000 foreign visitors also pour in to join this wild four-day samba celebration.

Suicide bomber strikes Shiite pilgrims in Iraq

The WWI may not have been a religious war, but WWII certainly was.

1. All the Fascist Axis (Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, even France) were Catholics, and had Pope's blessing
2. The Allies were Protestants (USA, UK, Netherlands etc.)
3. Both concurred on a Final Solution in the West (even for Canada 1 Jew was too many). Israel is a living proof
4. Fascist wantedHoly Victory (Sieg Heil). Revisionsts now say that they only meant Hail Victory
5. The tone of the movie Triumph of the Will is religious

That is understandable. The soul of the Modern Democratic West is anti-Jewish. Magna Carta contains 3 clauses limiting Jewish activities.

How does the WWII differ from the present unstated Sunni-Shia carnage? What confuses the Westerners is that in Islam religion is not separate from politics, in the West it is.

December 2007 Archives

Everyone gets DUI's. Thousands are handed out every day, but you only hear about it when celebrities get them. It is a big deal but it's not a big deal - just a slap on the wrist."

-- Jack Osbourne

This is NOT something to believe in EVER, much less on New Year's Eve. Don't drink and drive -- it is a big deal. Make the start of 2008 as fantastic as you want the rest of the year to be.

Much love and best wishes for a happy and healthy!

XOXO Tracy
