Beware the Internet’s Looming Class Divide

Every week, presenters would show us fantastical pieces of technology that would, in The Distant Future, remake the world. A telephone you could carry everywhere, in a little briefcase of its own! A special machine that would tell drivers where they were and supply directions in a smooth, soft voice! Computers all wired together that could communicate across long distances and contain reams of information for all to see!

Now we all live in an episode of Tomorrow's World, faster than we could possibly have imagined. It is easy - and a little trite - to gush with Panglossian glee about the internet. But, still. Today, anyone with a laptop and an internet connection has access to a heftier chunk of humanity's knowledge than the most privileged visitor to the Great Library of Alexandria in the third century BC, or the British Library reading room just a generation ago.

Blaze kills 100 animals

Ypu may be surprised to find out, it doesn't really show how good your Fire Department truely is. Since fires are only 20-25% of the total call volume. Insurance will build me a new house, but those medics that ISO does not count, saved the life of my neighbor. ISO does not rank how well the Hazardous Materials Team responds to incidents. ISO counts Water Supply, how well it is applied, how fast it gets applied, and for how long. By the way, what is your Non-Hydranted ISO Rating? How long is your longest Tender Shuttle? Or are you just a citified Firefighter with all of the conviences of home? By the way, you might want to look up http://www.pwcgov.org/default.aspx?topic=040026000110004566. Pay attention to the video! Read and absorb the report. Their ISO ratin is a "1"! Then come talk with me about Vollies and Career.

Triathlete Royce Laine Jr. meets challenges head-on

Royce Laine, Jr., son of Royce Laine of Lake Isabella, has gotten a new lease on life through fitness, and has inspired people across the nation to get moving.

A former triathalete who had planned on someday going pro, Laine had been honorably discharged from the Air Force as a disabled veteran due to cumulative back injuries when he had a freak accident that lost him the use of his legs forever. While at a local men's basketball game twelve years ago, Laine ran onto the court to celebrate his team's win and get on T.V. When he reached the floor, he dropped his t-shirt and slipped while picking it up, and was subsequently trampled by the crowd, crushing his spine. 'I got onto T.V. the wrong way,' he said.

Until 2006, Laine used a power wheelchair that allowed him to get out of shape and become angry at the world.

Country profile: Kenya

In the Great Rift Valley palaeontologists have discovered some of the earliest evidence of man's ancestors.

In the present day, Kenya's ethnic diversity has produced a vibrant culture but is also a source of conflict.

Tracking the cycle - a topsy turvy year in M&A

Downtown, almost the very tip of the island. It's a freezing grey day outside. Sat in the twentieth floor of a deep-carpeted office of a leading M&A lawyer. For all the talk of the shift in power to London, this is it. This spiky concrete jungle is still the hard-wired centre of global money-flow and still knows it. Like the steaks – they still do it bigger and better here.

Talk in the meetings is of covenant-lite deals, EBITDA holidays, and private equity and bulge bracket clients tearing up the rulebooks. Barbarians at the gate? More like the barbarians guarding the gates. ‘But how long can the rule-bending last?' says my interviewee, his caution rings in my ears as I rush to my gate at JFK and the Christmas break. The New Year, however, will bring yet more record-breaking buyouts: TXU ($44bn), First Data ($27bn), and Alltel ($27bn).

Ice closes schools; more could come

The snow hit late Thursday afternoon, quickly turning roads icy. Cold overnight temperatures meant the snow and ice stayed around, prompting public school officials to cancel Friday's classes, and leaving commuters to head back to work on slippery roads.Police responded to dozens of weather-related crashes Thursday night and Friday morning but reported no serious injuries. The Benton County Sheriff's Office reported that officers responded to at least 15 vehicle accidents and 30 reports of cars sliding off the road. No injuries resulted from the accidents, said Lt. Greg Ridler."The (deputies) that normally get off work at 3 a.m. were still here until 7:30 a.m.," Ridler said. "They were pretty exhausted when I got here in the morning."Ridler said the areas around Northwest Springhill Drive, Scenic Drive, Highway 20W and the west hills were especially problematic.Corvallis Police Sgt.

2% entertainment tax on deck

Claudia Location: j. on Oct 5, 2007 at 10:13 PM Just another one of Fayhey's Follies. Heaven hElp us if he gets elected to any other ofice, in either our city or any other office. He's just to busy making a name for himself, rather than doing any good for this city.Making himself a joke is more like it.
Posted by: Justin Location: BIG O! on Oct 5, 2007 at 07:15 PM I do not agree with this tax one bit, not to mention I do not agree with building a new stadium. Taxes of Nebraska pushed me across the river, everything is cheaper there; from gas and cigarettes to eating a nice dinner with your family. I do not understand why the Mayor of Omaha wants to spend millions of dollars the city DOES NOT have for a new stadium, espicially when we have the gun crime problems this city has. 3-5 shootings a night, in North Omaha? But its ok to brush those off and worry about spending 95-125 MILLION dollars because he thinks everybody in this city can afford it.

Gerresheimer: Record Year in 2007 and Positive Outlook for 2008
