| Vendor plan not racist, Meyer says
A south-side Des Moines city councilman who wants tougher regulations on mobile food vendors and roadside flea markets is upset that activists have attacked the plan as racist. The council on Monday delayed the second of three required votes on Councilman Brian Meyer's measure. The initial vote won unanimous approval, but it faced none of the racially charged criticism that surfaced at Monday's council meeting. "They've said, 'This is Jim Crow,' or 'You are picking on Latinos.' That is offensive to me," Meyer said Tuesday. Jim Crow laws mandated "separate but equal" status for blacks, mostly in Southern states before the 1960s. .
Marvel puts old comics online
Comics will be proffered online Nov. 13, viewed through a web browser. They will not be downloadable. Marvel is hoping fans will get hooked and be willing to shell out $9.99 US a month, or $4.99 US a month with an annual membership, for the privilege of viewing old issues online. About 2,500 issues will be available at first with 20 more released each week. Fans will be treated to the first 100 issues of Stan Lee's 1963 Amazing Spider-Man series and other titles such as House of M and Young Avengers. The move comes after Marvel's two competitors began showcasing their products online. Dark Horse comics puts monthly anthologies for free viewing on its MySpace site. DC Comics offers weekly peeks at the first few pages of upcoming issues.

Combine nature and elegance to transform home
Let sunlight pour in through clerestories, skylights and transom windows. •Live outside as well as in. Open whole walls to the outdoors, extend the roof outward, let the floor slip seamlessly outside to become a deck. Cook and eat on the patio, build a fire in an outdoor fireplace, take a nap in a hanging bed on the porch. •Listen to the rain. Replace the downspouts hanging from your gutters with rain chains. The next time rain falls, go outside and listen to the chains sing. .
Spontaneous catastrophe: Notes from a recent 'Bakken Evening Out'
Behind the thick stone walls and arched windows of an impressive 25,000-square-foot home on Lake Calhoun, one might expect to find fine wine and food, enlightened conversation, entertainment and music. And one would find all of these things in this beautiful structure, mingling with some lunatic dressed as Ben Franklin, a machine that electrocutes you, strange fish, Frankenstein’s monster and a little miniature house that explodes. Welcome to the Bakken Museum, second Tuesday of the month. The home sits tucked away on the west shore of Lake Calhoun, almost out of sight from those touring the lakes by bike or car. No extravagant sign marks the spot, although being a museum of electricity, the proprietors could surely think of something to grab the attention of passersby.
