Britney Spears A Spaced Odyssey, As Told By Sam Lutfi

UsWeekly is in conversation with Osama Lutfi, manager and confident to Britney Spears.

Says he: "The British accent is part of the mania. She'll stick to the British accent because she becomes comfortable with it… But you know, when the pink wig comes on, it's getting bad."

The correct wig to accompany a British accent is, naturally, a red , white a blue one, or something by Man At Elton John.

Lutfi then says how he gave Britney "a handful of sleeping pills" before she was sent to the hospital. He told her: "I said these pills are working wonders, they are miracle pills."

If you take them all, the miracle is that you ever wake up again. Or else pink angels descend on strings of strawberry liquorice. Tis miraculous.

The ambulance is here now, Britney.

The times they are a changin

Nasser had the courage to say no to the foreign powers when it involved the future of something as major as the High Dam. Now, we can’t say no to the minor things. I’m not siding with Nasser, I’m siding with an ideology: the dignity of a nation. But don’t get me wrong! We believe in the private and public sector alike, but the private sector should fall under the supervision of the public sector, it should produce basic commodities we need, like the bread loaf, not Chipsy [the popular brand of potato chips].” .

From the SCCC Kitchen: Almond biscotti a fun breakfast treat, dunk you ...

Form into a semiflattened log and place on sheet tray with parchment paper.

Bake approximately 20 to 30 minutes until lightly browned and firm to the touch. Remove and let cool for 10 minutes.

On a cutting board with a serrated knife, cut the log into 1⁄2-inch slices on the diagonal.

Arrange evenly on the 1⁄2 sheet pan with parchment paper and bake an additional 10 minutes until firm to the touch and browned. Remove and let cool

For chocolate ganache, mix together liquid ingredients with butter and bring to slight boil in a sauce pan. Stir in chocolate chips a little at a time until melted. Strain the mixture through a strainer. To reheat, use a double boiler.

Once the biscotti have cooled, dip each piece halfway up in chocolate ganache and sprinkle with toasted sliced almonds.

Chris Matthews: Defeat Means Troops Still in Iraq--What About WWII?

Did you know that the US is still at war with Korea, Germany, Japan, Bosnia and Kosovo? Based on “Hardball" host Chris Matthews' recent claims, we are still at war with those countries and will be until our troops leave their soil. (h/t Weasel Zippers)

On his November 28 show (transcript here), MSNBC's Matthews discussed Iraq with Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, wondering when “will we be able to come home." In the process, the former Carter speechwriter said, “If we can't ever come home, we can't ever say we won."

Silly me, I thought WWII, the Korean War, the Bosnian War and the Kosovo War were over. I guess the US troops still stationed in those countries prove otherwise (bold mine throughout):

More than lives taken by NIU shooting

But last year I remarked to myself that the commons looked no different from my long-ago college days there. Everything seemed the same.

That changed forever Thursday. Everything changed forever Thursday at Northern Illinois University.

The slaughter occurred just off the busy commons - named for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - at Cole Hall. I can't begin to count the number of lectures I had there. Most of the time, my sleep-deprived eyes fought to stay open as I rued the boredom of classes. In the aftermath of Thursday, such quietude at Cole Hall sounds so sweet, so wonderful - and, now in our minds, so perpetually elusive.

I can't claim to be what most people would call a good alumnus. I don't get up to NIU much, and I no longer go to Homecoming. Certainly, I'm not the type of heavy hitter whom a university would seek to help fund big, new academic buildings.

In nod to Spain, Alaska's largest city holds first reindeer run

One had taped a paper bulls-eye to her back. Others masqueraded as carrots and lichen, both favorite foods of reindeer. At the signal to go, the reindeer stampeded into the crowd. Passing tourist shops, the downtown federal building and a stand selling reindeer hotdogs, the animals were well out in front by the halfway point."We thought, 'Ok, they're just going to mosey along,' but they took off running," said Amanda Pelkola, who dressed as a carrot with a friend. "We got smoked by the reindeer." .

Governor opts to be stubborn in scandal

Blunt's hasty announcement is the first inkling since the controversy broke over Martin's mishandling of the firing of former staff attorney Scott Eckersley that the governor might be ready to accept responsibility for clear violations of the Sunshine Law and the state's e-mail retention policies.

But jettisoning Martin after so many public denials of the former chief of staff's misdeeds will only go so far in regaining any trust in the ability of the governor to be accountable to the taxpayers. Indeed, ever since the News-Leader asked for an e-mail from Martin in August, the Blunt administration has charted too many courses to navigate when it comes to outlining its policy on the Sunshine Law and e-mail retention. We don't understand why the governor won't just come out and say that he and members of his staff got it wrong.

New Pima Canyon parking too tight for comfort

The idea was to revamp Pima Canyon to prevent visitors from parking on the dirt in the park and to make sure there was room for emergency vehicles to get to the trail head. But in protecting the park, the number of vehicles that could be parked was severely reduced and the newly-striped parking spaces are so small that pickup trucks and sports utility vehicles can barely fit in. "You have to be really careful when you park," said Ryan Page of Tempe, who was in the park last week preparing to hike into South Mountain Park. "The spaces are just too small and people don’t know how to park." The spaces are small because Phoenix has a double standard when it comes to parallel parking spaces: 21 feet long for a metered parking space downtown and 18 feet everywhere else, including Pima Canyon.
